Mass of the ChildrenThis concert saw Cantorum joined by the excellent Taplow Girls’ Choir. Mass of the Children was first performed in New York in 2003. It is a Missa Brevis, containing just five of the traditional movements of the choral Mass, intercut with several poems of the composer’s choosing. The children’s choir is given an integral role in the work, rather than just being employed as an additional tonal colour, so to speak, and so the two choirs both have an equal and important contribution to the overall piece. Rutter’s secure writing and skilful management of the resources make this composition a very attractive programme item.

Our performance was very well received. The blend of textures in contrasting timbres – adult voices, children’s voices, orchestra including percussion, organ – all worked effectively together under Elisabeth Toye’s assured direction. The choir acquitted itself with credit and satisfaction at a work well sung. We should very much like to thank Taplow Girls’ Choir and their director, Gillian Dibden, for joining us. We were also very pleased to welcome as soloists Jonathan Wood (Baritone) and his wife Victoria (Soprano) – both Cookham based.

During the first half of the concert, the Girls’ Choir sang a selection from their repertoire, including a traditional African Alleluia from Ghana, Schumann’s Butterfly, and the hauntingly sung Drop Drop Slow Tears, by Orlando Gibbons. Cantorum gave a fine and meticulous account of four of Parry’s “Songs of Farewell: There is an Old Belief, Never Weather-beaten Sail, I know my Soul hath Power, and the famous My Soul, there is a Country. The programme also included Malcolm Arnold’s Three Shanties for Wind Quintet – a demanding, if light-hearted, piece played stunningly by members of the orchestra.

A donation from receipts is being made to the Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service.
