O Holy Night - Cantorum Choir 2010“O Holy Night”, Cantorum’s Christmas concert this year, struck both a new note and a traditional one. Liz Toye’s new venture was the use of a brass quintet, sited at the far end of the church directly under the altar, to replace the more usual St John’s organ accompaniment. This decision meant that all six congregational carols were sung to thrilling “sounding brass”. And, in addition, the quintet played a virtuosic Christmas medley as an individual item in the second half of the two performances (afternoon and evening).

The ‘traditional’ element, on the other hand, was indicated by the second half climax and title piece “O Holy Night” by Adolphe Adam (soprano solo sung by Kirstie Kinge). In other words, the programme told the events of the Nativity night in their narrative sequence, rather than simply presenting a miscellaneous collection of carols.

The concert opened with A Fanfare for Christmas by Robin Wells, and items sung by the choir included Elizabeth Poston’s lovely Jesus Christ the Apple Tree, a setting of My Dancing Day by former King’s Singer Bob Chilcott, The Road to Bethlehem by Patrick Hadley, Sweelinck’s late renaissance anthem Hodie Christus Natus Est to indicate the moment of the birth, Cornelius’s The Three Kings and Warlock’s lullaby Balulalow, as well as other favourite pieces all contributing, along with the congregational carols, to the storytelling. An introduction to our Christmas repertoire was A Spotless Rose by Ola Gjeilo, sung in Norwegian.

O Holy NightTo judge by the reaction of the audience, the performances were a striking success. Comments included “The quality of singing and of the brass quintet was delightful”; “O Holy Night was FANTASTIC!” and “What a wonderful experience!” Ticket receipts broke records and the collections afterwards raised £774 – to be divided between our two chosen charities for this season: Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service and the Buildings Repair Project at St John the Baptist Church, Cookham Dean.
